Bind-runes are found to have served a number of practical functions, including conserving space and correcting errors in inscriptions, as well as facilitating runic encryption. MacLeod finds no evidence that bind-runes had special magical or religious functionality. MacLeod, Mindy & Bernard Mees, Runic Amulets and Magic Objects (2006).
